Hi, I'm just moving to Sabattus Pond and heard some ugly news from friends living in Greene, ME. They told me that the Pond was containated by DeCoster Egg Farms and that the water has algea and that the odors still follow prevailing winds. (I'm living at the north end) Can anyone with personal knowledge give me some background on what happened with DeCoster and Sabattus Pond. I thought they were closed down years ago. Thanks.

Hi Donna... thank you for your question... and sorry someone didn't answer this right away.. but better late than never! hehe btw, I"m writing this for our Vice President, Dan Guerette.... so here goes... DeCoster Egg Farm started in the mid 60s and by mid 70s they shut down. Unfortunately, the stigma of that bad publicity has remained in the minds of the older "elders". and they continue to spread untruths of today. The lake still experiences algea blooms but they are late in the season (lake august to early sept) with a short duration of 3-4 weeks. Although it is considered algea bloom, the thick floating scum that WAS prevalent in the old days (late 70s early 80s) is no longer here. Also, the lake is on a VERY short list of improving lakes.
